No.6 is a very historic old steam locomotive representing the pioneering years of the Queensland Government Railways. It was built by Neilson & Co of Glasgow, Scotland to their builder's number 1170 of 1865 as one of a group of 12 "B-class" 0-4-2 tender locomotives.

Class A10 0-4-2 Number 6 Number 6 was built by Neilson Reid & Co., Glasgow in 1865 (construction number 1170). She once operated in excursion service before being placed at the former Redbank Railway Museum for static display. In 1989 she was transported to Mayne (Brisbane suburb) for a complete restoration to working order. AR 6 (Wes Barris photo)

Over the preceding six years, two important exhibits had been donated to Queensland Railways, by an organisation external to QR. These were A10 No.6, and B13 48, which had operated privately on Gibson & Howes private tramway at Bingara and Watawa, near Bundaberg.

In the early 1880’s No.6 was hired out to railway construction contractor Overend and Co. to haul material trains on its section of the South Coast Railway contract. The Neilson B class engines were reclassified as A10’s following the new system introduced by Queensland Railways in 1890.
