In modern terms, the truck was an 8 X 8. All wheels drove through single tyres but only two of the axles steered - from opposite ends of the truck - axle one and axle four pivoting on the centre tandem. Traction was applied to all eight wheels through four differentials.

Engine is AEC 6-cyl diesel, 8.85-litres, 97kW (130hp), transmission is 4-speed manual with 3-speed transfer case. The AEC Goverment Roadtrain was built by Hardy Motors a subsidiary of AEC for the British Overseas Mechanical Transport Directing Committee for heavy transport in remote regions of the British Empire.
