Other than a one-hour test-sail in calm conditions with a borrowed sail, the boat's first real test was the 2002 Midwest Messabout at Rend Lake in Illinois, where I spent two nights aboard, evaluating my choice of boat design and how I had outfitted it. Here is my conclusions;

2008年10月31日 · The sail is made out of heavy polytarp, sewed with darts and dimensions according to the plans (except I added two rows of reef points). On her second sail, the GPS clocked her at 6.2 mph. Not bad for a 15.5 foot boat and a homemade sail.

The sail rig is a balanced lug which is easy to build and stow. I recommend that my customers sew their own sails either from common polytarp (as Garth did in the boat shown above) or real Dacron sailcloth.

With her balanced lugsail she makes for satisfying pottering on sheltered waters. The next design that caught my eye was his AF3, a 16ft by 5ft cuddy sharpie, it was boxy but looked seaworthy and the cuddy would be a boon. There are several AF3 builds documented on the Internet and Michalak’s plans are detailed so construction seemed simple.
