It has 9CU engine management on board, totally different than the one used in pre 1987 which were accurately mentioned by BigCatXJS as not entirely production ready. As a matter of fact it was even worst - pre-1987 AJ6 was a bonking disaster due to obsolete ECU mixed with high-tech engine design.

Apr 9, 2011 · that the AJ6 3.6L outperforms the 4.0L. AJ16 The 1988 onwards 3.6 is definately more refined the the earlier versions. The 4.0L cars are just a bit more torquey. The AJ6 is reckoned to be Jaguars most reliable engine ever, but the AJ16 also has rave reports.

Feb 15, 2021 · I bet you can still get a AJ6 4.0 engine quite cheap, usually it's the last part of the car to ever wear out - most XJ40's died due to rust or simply uneconomic to repair other faults. The other thing is, those early 3.6's are nothing like as developed as the later AJ6's, and I noticed the car was a lot more refined running with the 4.0. Cheers Rob

Apr 15, 2013 · I've been reading that some owners have done away with the oil cooler and pipes and fitted a bypass unit below the oil filter. As I understand it, the oil cooler was an over engineered addition by Jaguar to the AJ6 engine, especially in cooler climates such as the UK. I'm considering fitting this mod.
