Mercedes-Benz W202 is the internal designation for a compact sedan/saloon manufactured and marketed by Mercedes-Benz between 1992 and 2001, as the first generation of the C-Class, now in its fifth generation.

The transmission is an AMG-modified version of the 5-speed automatic gearbox found on the 1998-2000 R129 SL500. Modifications were made to achieve a crisper and better-adapted gearbox to higher-rpm upshifts. Also, the braking system was adopted from the W210 E55 AMG.

The AMG-built V-8 engine from the CLK55 AMG, a coupe and cabriolet model built on the W202 C-Class chassis using some E-Class suspension parts, replaced the V-6 of the C32, upping output to 362 horsepower, but requiring substantial modifications to the front suspension and a completely different set of front body panels from the basic W203 C-Class.

A six-speed manual gearbox was optional on some of the range, With exception to the C320 and C32 AMG. Notably (post 2005), for the first time, the number designations were no longer equivalent to the engine displacement, more specifically in the Mercedes C200 (1.8-litre), C240 (2.6-litre) and C200 CDI (2.2-litre).

The W202 generation offered a range of variants including C180, C200, C200 Kompressor, C220, C230, C230 Kompressor, C240, C280, C36 AMG, C43 AMG (Sedan and Wagon), and the rare C55 AMG. Also included Diesel variants such as the C220 CDI .

The W204 line offered a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, a 3.5-litre V6 petrol and a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine are also available. The AMG variant, marketed as the C 63 AMG used the 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine. [16]
