25 August 2014: Ethiopian AMISOM troops assisted by Somali government forces capture Tiyeglow from Al-Shabaab, as part of Operation Indian Ocean. Situated around 530 km northeast of Mogadishu along the main road linking Beledweyne and Baidoa, Tiyeglow previously served as a base for the insurgent group.

African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), a peace keeping mission operated by the AU in Somalia with approval by the UN.

Currently the military component is comprised of troops drawn from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia who are deployed in six sectors covering south and central Somalia. Ugandan troops are deployed in Sector 1, which comprises the regions of Banadir, and Lower Shabelle.

May 30, 2018 · In 2011, AMISOM began an operation that dislodged al Shabaab from Mogadishu’s central business district and flushed them out of the country’s main supply routes and regional centers. By 2017, al Shabaab had been expelled from most of its strongholds in southern Somalia. Along the way, AMISOM troops took significant casualties.

Apr 18, 2017 · Firstly, AMISOM has had to become a ‘party to the conflict’: in order to protect Somalia’s transitional federal institutions (TFIs) in a high-threat environment, the mission conducts active counter-insurgency and counterterrorism operations. Secondly, troops from Somalia’s neighbours constitute the bulk of AMISOM’s forces.

On 25 February 2025, Somali federal government and the African Union have finalized the troop distribution for the new mission and resolving prior disputes between Ethiopian and Somalia and later Burundi and Somalia. The mission will deploy 11,900 personnel, including soldiers, police, and civilian staff.
