TOK consists of three different elements: the core theme (knowledge & the knower), the optional themes (knowledge and, respectively, indigenous societies, language, politics, religion, and technology), and the areas of knowledge (the arts, history, the human sciences, mathematics, and the natural sciences).

The TOK core theme is knowledge and the knower, which examines individual cognition, and how we process our understanding about the world. The optional themes are five different ‘affiliations’ that shape the way we acquire knowledge.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course is split into two parts. Themes, and Areas of Knowledge. For the exhibition, students focus on the themes learned during the first year of the IB Diploma Programme, while the TOK Essay focuses on the Areas of Knowledge (AOK) primarily introduced in the latter half of their TOK education.

Both the themes and the AOKs help to define us as knowers, which we focus on within the core theme – knowledge and the knower – as well as looking at the different communities of knowers to which we belong.

The core theme of TOK is called 'Knowledge and the knower', and considers ways in which personal knowers produce, use, and make sense of knowledge about the world. Like the optional themes, it provides content that can be drawn on within the exhibition.
