The abbreviation APL stands for Advanced Physical Layer and describes a further development of physical data transmission in Ethernet networks. This physical layer makes it possible to exchange Ethernet data via only two wires, instead of the previously required four or eight wires.

The APL field switch makes the state-of-the-art Ethernet APL communication technology easy to use. The managed switch enables efficient and secure data transmission and offers high bandwidths and low latency times. APL sensors and devices from the field level can be directly integrated into the existing Ethernet network of the system.

Ethernet-APL (Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer) is the new 2-wire solution for Ethernet in the process industry. It makes fast Ethernet available down to field level and in hazardous areas, which is the only way to make the consistent digitalisation of processing systems a reality.

Ethernet-APL is based on global, open standards from the IEEE and the IEC. Ethernet is used via a 2-wire conductor with transfer rates of 10 MBit/s that is suitable for distances of up to 1000 m – standardised as 10BASE-T1L.

The Switch provides up to 24 ports for connection to APL-capable instruments or already installed field devices. This gives the user access to multiple process values from a field device, such as volume, mass, temperature and density from a flow meter.

The Ethernet-APL field switch, which is powered by the APL trunk for outdoor installation up to Zone 1, is designed for system layouts with a larger footprint. The third variant, the Ethernet-APL power switch, is installed in the control cabinet. It supplies the APL main line with power.
