Her name has also been transliterated as Arf, particularly in INNOCENT media. Alph makes her first appearance in Nanoha (ep.4), in Uminari City with Fate in search of Jewel Seeds.

She then appears in Nanoha, establishing herself as a familiar that can shapeshift between human, dog-woman, and a fearsome giant red dog.

Arf was a former villainess in the anime show Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. According to Sound Stage 2, she began her life as a pup for a wolf pack that lived in the mountains of Mid-Childs. She later contacted a contagious disease, and was cast out to ensure the health of the pack.

Arf despises Fate's mother and is only loyal to Fate. Late in the series, when she is injured after attacking Precia over her mistreatment of Fate, she retreats to Earth and seeks help from Nanoha, later helping in the assault on the Garden of Time.

Arf lives with Fate in an apartment on Earth, and teleports to their other home in Precia's hideout, the Garden of Time. Arf tries to tell Fate that her mother's abuse isn't right, but Fate refuses to listen and keeps coming back. In A's, Fate and Arf join the Time-Space Administration Bureau and go to Earth to team up with Nanoha again.
