Arp 147, an interacting pair of ring galaxies. The Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies is a catalog of peculiar galaxies produced by Halton Arp in 1966. A total of 338 galaxies are presented in the atlas, which was originally published in 1966 by the California Institute of Technology.

Arp 149, IC 803, is a pair of interacting galaxies in Coma Berenices about 370 million light-years away. Arp put it in his category: Galaxies with Jets. He made no comment on this one.

Halton Arp's "Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies" was meant to provide examples of various types of galaxies as a guide for study of the origin and evolution of galaxies, at a time (the mid-1960's) when astronomers had little idea what that involved.

Arp 147, an interacting pair of ring galaxies. Arp realized that the reason why galaxies formed into spiral or elliptical shapes was not well understood. He perceived peculiar galaxies as small "experiments" that astronomers could use to understand the physical processes that distort spiral or elliptical galaxies.

From Virginia Beach , Arp 149 is visible in the morning sky, becoming accessible around 23:48, when it reaches an altitude of 21° above your eastern horizon. It will then reach its highest point in the sky at 04:47, 69° above your southern horizon.
