2015年9月3日 · Also known as NGC 4747, the smaller distorted galaxy at left is the 159th entry in the Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies, with extensive tidal tails indicative of strong gravitational interactions in its past. At about a 100,000 light-years across, its likely companion on the right is the much larger NGC 4725.

Along with NGC 4725 is its paired galaxy NGC 4747 (also known as Arp 159) - classed SBcd pec edge-on. Finally, there is a small dwarf galaxy of NGC 4725 -ASK 667300.0 (LEDA 43595). The three galaxies comprise the galaxy group NGC 4752/47 Group.

2016年7月6日 · I always find interacting galaxies to be quite fascinating and NGC 4725 along with it's colliding neighbor, NGC 4747 (Arp 159), is no exception. While the prominent consequence of this collision was the loss of one of NGC 4725's spiral arm, my big goal with this image was to capture Arp 159's extended and faint tidal tail:

Arp 159/NGC 4747 is a very distorted galaxy in Coma Berenices not far from the famous Coma Galaxy Cluster, about 68 million light-years distant by redshift. By Tully-Fisher measurements, it is closer, about 40 million light years.
