2018年5月4日 · Arp 281 consists of NGC 4631 (UGC 7865, the Whale Galaxy and others) the large barred spiral galaxy and NGC 4627 (UGC 7860 and others), the smaller dwarf elliptical companion. Part of Arp’s ‘Double galaxies with infall and attraction’ class, both are located approximately 30 million light-years away in Canes Venatici.

The gigantic, shiny NGC 4631 (also known as the Whale galaxy) and its smaller and much fainter companion, the NGC 4656 (or Hockeystick galaxy) fit perfectly well in an eyepiece with at least 1 degrees of FoV, a very spectacular double.

The Whale Galaxy NGC4631, also designated Arp 281, in Canes Venatici. A stack of 8 eight minute exposures using an SXV-H9 CCD camera on a Vixen R200SS 8" f/4 Newtonian equipped with a Paracorr. The exposures were calibrated, defect-corrected and stacked using AIP4WIN.
