In a general way, the ARV (Armoured Recovery Vehicle), a military acronym well known today as AVLB (bridge layer) or CEV (Combat engineering vehicle), was a vehicle dedicated to recover battle damaged or broken down tanks during combat, saving them to receive more extensive repairs behind the frontlines.

K1 Armored Recovery Vehicle(ARV), as described, is designed to recover damaged tanks from the battlefield. It is one of the essential vehicles which recovers tanks from areas under threat or repair them within a safe area.

K1 AVLB is designed to support mechanized units with field maneuver and swift obstacle removal. K1 AVLB builds temporary bridges to support operations of mechanized units, with only 2 crew members operating the vehicle.

The K1 AVLB is an armored vehicle launched bridge based on the K1 main battle tank and deployed by the Republic of Korea Army 1993. It was developed by Hyundai Rotem in the late 1980s with assistance from Vickers (now part of BAE Systems) of UK. The scissor-type bridge system mounted on the chassis is 4 meters and 22 meters long.
