An armed response vehicle (ARV) [1] is a type of police car operated by police forces in the United Kingdom, Crown Dependencies, and British Overseas Territories. Typically crewed by 3 authorised firearms officers (AFOs), they respond to incidents believed to involve firearms or other high-risk situations. [2] .

Armed response units / firearms units are teams of armed Police Officers tasked with countering crimes committed by armed criminals. Each UK constabulary / force has some form of firearms team. One of the nation's most prominent firearms units is the London Metropolitan Police Service's SCO19.

SCO19 is the Metropolitan Police Service's (MPS) specialist firearms unit. This elite cadre of highly-trained police officers are on standby to respond to any armed incident in London. Both men and women can join SCO19. SCO19 has around 550 members, including training staff, TST, CTSFO and ARV units. SCO19 was previously CO19, before that SO19.
