He has always been fascinated by American Sign Language (ASL) performance art and storytelling styles. Throughout his teenage years, he had incredibly deep bonds with several of his close friends who also enjoy sharing a variety of ASL stories, and that was where he defined numerous storytelling techniques along with sign language expressions.

My presentation will focus on the history of Visual Vernacular, its prominent features (including facial expressions, gestures, classifiers), and will include a few brief hands-on activities to see the benefits of interpreting in Visual Vernacular or using some of its aspects. Cinematic vocabulary, also known as "visual vernacular" identified by Bernard Bragg, is not only unique to motion images; visual-manual language is also noted for its cinematic capabilities. In integration with syntactic elements, visual-manual language employs cinematic techniques in four-dimensional environment.

This course helps beginning ASL students learn how to properly form signs, demonstrates signs from several angles, and leads students to a basic signing vocabulary. SWM also provides more advanced ASL training in our annual summer ASL Institutes in Georgia and Pennsylvania.
