The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students.
ASVAB Career Exploration Program
The ASVAB is offered to high school and post-secondary students as part of the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. The program provides tools to help students learn more about career exploration and planning, in both the civilian and military worlds of work.
The paper and pencil ASVAB (called the P&P-ASVAB) is a traditional test, which means that everyone takes the same set of questions at the same pace. The number of test questions and time limits for each test are shown on page 3. In all, it takes about 3 hours to complete the P&P-ASVAB. You are allowed to review your answers on the P&P-ASVAB.
Understanding ASVAB Scores
AFQT scores are computed using the Standard Scores from four ASVAB subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Word Knowledge (WK). AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1-99.
ASVAB Fact Sheet
The purpose of the Fact Sheet is to provide you with information about the military enlistment test, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). ASVAB scores are used to determine if you are qualified to enlist in the military and to assign you to an appropriate job in the military.
Unproctored Administration of the ASVAB: PiCAT | ASVAB
The unproctored version of CAT-ASVAB is called PiCAT (short for Pending Internet Computerized Adaptive Test) and can be taken from anywhere that has an internet connection. Unlike the ASVAB, it doesn’t need to be taken at a MEPS or MET site and there are no time limits for the individual subtests.
What to Expect When You Take the ASVAB | ASVAB
The ASVAB is administered by computer at the MEPS and at most MET sites. The paper-and-pencil version is given at only a handful of MET sites. Testing procedures will vary depending on the mode of administration. You cannot use a calculator when taking the ASVAB.
Understanding ASVAB Scores
The IRT model underlying ASVAB scoring is the three-parameter logistic (3PL) model. The 3PL model represents the probability that an examinee at a given level of ability will respond correctly to an individual item with given characteristics.
