ATSF 2312 was one of ten all-steel drovers cars constructed at the Topeka Shops in 1931. Originally numbered D938, it featured coach seats in one end and bunk beds in the other to accomodate the cowboys (drovers) that tended the cattle on livestock trains.

Started in 1970, Santa Fe operated a total of 61 GP38s from General Motors Electro-Motive Division. During the 80s they were rebuilt into GP38us and renumbered from the 3500 to the 2300 series. At least one unit, 2312, was repainted into the Southern Pacific-Santa Fe “Kodachrome” merger scheme.

ATSF 2312 at Kansas City, KS on 08-10-1995. Looks like the plow was removed, lights moved to the nose and the horn moved back on the long hood while it was in the shop.

ATSF 2312 is what has come to be known as an "HH1000," built by Alco in June 1939. Your photo captures perfectly the slightly-off balance look of these units, as though they might tip over backwards if the engineer goosed the throttle.
