Santa Fe's Lone GP40 - Railfan
The locomotive emerged with yet another road number, ATSF 2964, which put it just above the rebuilt GP35's. The locomotive joined Santa Fe's large fleet of less-than-3000hp 4-axle roadswitchers, and fell into the jack-of-all-trades role common to this type of locomotive: switching, local assignments, and occasional road freights.

Photos of the unit wearing the number 3461 are pretty rare. It was renumbered from TP&W 1000 in mid-January 1984, and as the photo shows, by March it was at the San Bernardino shops to be rebuilt. It would emerge in August as ATSF 2964, wearing blue and yellow paint and rated at 2500hp, the same as the GP35's numbered below it.

ATSF 2964 Fort Sumner NM June 21 1986 -- On the longest day of the year Santa Fe GP35u 2964 is eastbound over U.S. 60 with a TOFC train. EMD built the unit in May 1969 as TP&W 1000. Santa Fe acquired it on Jan. 1 1984 when it absorbed the TP&W and the locomotive was renumbered to ATSF 3461.
