Between 1917 and 1920, the AT&SF received a total of 128 more "Mikados". The locomotives of this group were assigned road numbers 3160 through 3287 and were about 20 tons heavier than the earlier ones. They had 63" diameter drivers, 27" x 32" cylinders, a 200 psi boiler pressure and they exerted 62, 950 pounds of tractive effort.

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway class 3160 was the last class of steam locomotives to be purchased by AT&SF. The class was introduced by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1917.

Looking for more power, the AT&SF bought two 4-8-2 "Mountains" from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1918. One of them, road number 3700, was a coal burner and the other, road number 3701, burned oil. Before these two were delivered, another ten were ordered: five coal burners and five oil burners (road numbers 3702 through 3711).

As initially delivered, both the 3160 and 4000 series had a single sand dome. By the mid-1930s, it appears all engines had been refitted with two-chamber Elesco pumps and a second sand dome. As one of the most common classes of engines in the Santa Fe fleet, 3160s and 4000s could be found almost anywhere on the system.
