The 96's career ended tragically on Cajon Pass on December 14, 1994, when the westbound freight it was on ran away and rear-ended a stopped UP freight. The crews managed to jump to safety, but six locomotives were destroyed, including FP45 96 and F45 5976 on the Santa Fe train and two UP helper locomotives on the rear of the UP train.

Santa Fe SDFP45 No. 5944 was wrecked in 1981, Santa Fe SDFP45 No. 96 was wrecked in 1994 on Cajon Pass. While No. 91 was sold to the Wisconsin Central in January 1995, becoming their #6652 and the rest stayed in service right up until the BNSF merger in 1996, and were retired shortly after the merger.

2024年10月20日 · The year of 1989 saw the re-birth of Santa Fe’s iconic red and sliver “warbonnet” scheme originally introduced in the mid 1930’s. This modernized version with large lettering became the standard for all wide cab Santa Fe diesel locomotives purchased from 1990 until the BNSF “heritage” scheme introduced after the merger.
