
Santa Fe's Lone GP40 - Railfan
Santa Fe cast off most of the Alcos and smaller EMD power, but kept the medium horsepower, 4-axle EMD's. GP40 #1000 was renumbered to Santa Fe 3461 in January 1984, just above Santa Fe's GP35's and below the Santa Fe numbers assigned to TP&W's GP35's (3462-3464).

In August 1984 it was rebuilt, repainted, renumbered to 2964 and designated a GP35u despite retaining its GP40 carbody. On Jan. 28 1988 it was wrecked at Pico Rivera CA and was scrapped. Santa Fe acquired it on Jan. 1 1984 when it absorbed the TP&W, and the locomotive was renumbered to ATSF 3461. In August 1984 it was rebuilt, repainted, renumbered to 2964. It was designated a GP35u despite retaining its GP40 carbody.

The GP40 is powered by EMD’s 16 cylinder, 645E3 prime mover, producing 3,000hp, and much like its predecessor, the GP35, was successful and proved reliable for many class 1 and shortline carriers.

2025年2月12日 · Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway's only GP40, the 2964 was derated to 2500 hp and classed as a GP35u. It was formerly ATSF 3461, which was Toledo Peoria & Western's only GP40 1000, originally EMD "loaner" 21. It was destroyed in a fatal wreck at Pico Rivera, CA, on January 28, 1988.
