The Electromotive Division SD24 is a 6 axle, 2,400 HP diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD from 1958 to 1963. It was the first locomotive to be built by EMD with a turbocharged engine, the engine being a 16 cylinder turbocharged 567.

The EMD SD24 is a 2,400 hp (1,800 kW) six-axle (C-C) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors ' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois between July 1958 and March 1963. [1] A total of 224 units were built for customers in the United States, comprising 179 regular, cab-equipped locomotives and 45 cabless B units.

The 900-class fleet had been on Santa Fe property over 12 years, however the rate of locomotive technology had progressed rapidly over the years, and the minor upgrades to the SD24 fleet were put into place to bring about increased performance and increased cost savings for the ATSF instead of having to purchase an entirely new class of locomotive.

By May, EMD was delivering the second order of SD24's in the new blue and yellow pinstripe scheme, and the units from the first order delivered in zebra-stripes were repainted very quickly into the new scheme.
