Powered by a V12 FDL prime mover, the 2250 h.p. U23B was GE’s intermediate-sized four-axle road-switcher of the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. The U23B’s direct competitor during this period was the very successful EMD GP38.

PURCELL OK July 1977 -- Santa Fe U23B 6314 leads two C&NW lease units as their mixed freight departs southbound. GE built the 6314 (s/n 37505) in August 1970 and delivered it in blue with yellow trim. After June 1972 it wore yellow warbonnet. It was sold to GE in Sept 1988 for use in the Super 7 program.
