AWS multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) best practice that requires a second authentication factor in addition to user name and password sign-in credentials. You can enable MFA at the AWS account level for root and IAM users you have created in your account.

For increased security, we recommend that you configure multi-factor authentication (MFA) to help protect your AWS resources. You can enable MFA for the AWS account root user of all AWS accounts, including standalone accounts, management accounts, and member accounts, as well as for your IAM users.
Assign a virtual MFA device in the AWS Management Console
You can register up to eight MFA devices of any combination of MFA types with your AWS account root user and IAM users. You only need one MFA device to sign in to the AWS Management Console or create a session through the AWS CLI.
