The Blue Nile Falls is a waterfall on the Blue Nile river in West Gojjam, Amhara Region, Ethiopia. It is known as Tis Abay in Amharic, meaning 'great smoke'. It is situated on the upper course of the river, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) downstream from the town of Bahir Dar and Lake Tana.

2019年3月1日 · Known in Amharic as Tis Abay (the Great Smoke), it is one of the country’s top natural attractions and the most dramatic event on the Blue Nile’s journey from its source at nearby Lake Tana to its confluence with the White Nile in Khartoum, Sudan.

Known locally as “Tiss Isat,” meaning “Great Smoke,” the Blue Nile Falls are the most dramatic waterfalls on the Nile River system. During the rainy season from June to September, the falls are at their most impressive, cascading down a 45-meter drop and creating a mesmerizing spectacle of mist and rainbows.

Leaving the Tis Abay town, the footpath drops into a deep basaltic rift spanned by an ancient fortified stone bridge, built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers. After a 15 minute walk, a stiff climb up a grassy hillside is then rewarded by superb view of the Blue Nile Falls.

Though far smaller than its natural 400m-wide flow, the three-pronged waterfall is still jaw-droppingly huge in August and September. From around January or February until March it’s now known as ‘Blue Nile Shower’ and it’s not really worth a visit.

From the village of Tis Abay, a splendid series of full-frontal viewpoints can be reached along a 1.5km footpath across the 17th century Alata Bridge. Birders should check the riverine forest here for endemics and near-endemics such as blue-breasted bee-eater, white-cheeked turaco, black-winged lovebird, and Yellow-fronted parrot.
