Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is a category of unclassified information within the U.S. Federal government. The CUI program was created by President Obama’s Executive Order 13556 to create a streamlined method for information sharing and safeguarding.
CUI protection under E.O. 13556 has been in effect since December 2010, and each U.S. Government agency has begun to implement guidance to protect CUI and is required to implement their CUI Programs by the end of calendar year 2021. All active contracts should now have CUI requirements in place though in some cases the effort is ongoing.
