Here, we investigate the neural basis of four types of abstract concepts, examining their similarities and differences through neuroimaging meta-analyses. We examine numerical and emotional concepts, and two higher-order abstract processes, morality judgements and theory of mind. Three main findings emerge.
Abstract Brain: Neuroscience Meets Art and Innovation
2024年9月30日 · At its core, the abstract brain refers to our mind’s ability to process and manipulate complex, intangible concepts. It’s the part of our cognitive function that allows us to think beyond the concrete and literal, enabling us to grasp metaphors, solve complex problems, and create works of art that transcend the physical world.

Cognitive neuroscience: How the brain navigates abstract task …
2025年1月20日 · Humans and other animals learn the abstract structure of a task and then use this structure to rapidly generalize to new situations. A recent study reveals how the brain builds and uses abstract task representations.
The Creation of Abstract Thoughts in the Brain
2021年8月3日 · By using a combination of mathematical modeling, machine learning and brain imaging technology, researchers have discovered what happens in the brain when people use mental abstractions. In essence, the brain system that normally tracks economic value becomes very active and ‘talks’ to the system that processes visual information.

[The cognitive and neural bases of abstract concepts]
2019年2月25日 · Here we review recent development in this field, focusing on both theoretical perspectives and neuroimaging findings. We found that abstract concepts can be represented via linguistic and experiential information; the neural correlates of abstract concepts are partly in line with such a theoretical framework.
