Acharnae or Acharnai (/ ə ˈ k ɑːr. n iː /; Ancient Greek: Ἀχαρναί) [1] was a deme of ancient Athens. It was part of the phyle Oineis. [2] Acharnae, according to Thucydides, was the largest deme in Attica. [3] In the fourth century BCE, 22 of the 500 members of the Athenian council came from Acharnae, more than from any other deme. Acharnes, also known as Menidi is a municipality in the East Attica regional unit in Greece. With 108,169 inhabitants (2021 census), it is the ninth most populous municipality in Greece. It lies just north of the Athens urban area. The northern part of the municipality is covered by the forested Parnitha mountain.

Acharnae was the largest deme (Thuc. 2.19.2, 21.2). of ancient Attica; it was located in the northwest part of the Attic plain, around Menidi, and about 10 km due north of Athens. The Acharnians chiefly grew cereals, grapes, and olives, although Aristophanes in his comedy The Acharnians caricatures them as charcoal-burners.

ACHARNAE (Ἀχαρναί: Eth. Ἀχαρνεύς, Eth. Acharnanus, Nep. Them.. 1.; Adj. Ἀχαρνικός), the principal demus of Attica, belonging to the tribe Oeneis, was situated 60 stadia N. of Athens, and consequently not far from the foot of Mt. Parnes.

Modern Description: The ancient deme of Acharnae was the most densely populated and one of the most important in Attica. In 2007 at Salaminos 21 in Acharnes several rows of seats were found from a classical theatre/sanctuary of Dionysos (in 2014 backfilled awaiting expropriation of neighboring lots).
