2019年3月21日 · In this pictorial essay, we sought to describe the anatomical structure of the pulmonary acinus through the analysis of a human lung sample on micro-CT. In addition, we aimed to illustrate how knowledge of acinar lung structure improves the comprehension of lung physiopathology in comparison with standard pulmonary imaging modalities.

An acinus (/ ˈ æ s ɪ n ə s /; pl.: acini; adjective, acinar / ˈ æ s ɪ n ər / or acinous) refers to any cluster of cells that resembles a many-lobed "berry", such as a raspberry (acinus is Latin for "berry").

The structure of the human pulmonary acinus has been described infrequently. The aim of the study was to determine the branching pattern of respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts in a human acinus from the peripheral part of the lung, where space constraints may have affected airway branching patterns.

The comprehension of the acinar architecture is pivotal for the understanding of CT findings of diseases that involve the acini. Centriacinar emphysema, for example, presents as round areas of low attenuation due to the destruction of the most central acini with compensatory enlargement of proximal acini due to alveolar wall destruction.
