Dandy was the mascot of the New York Yankees between 1979 and 1981. [1] He was a large pinstriped bird-like creature that sported a Yankees hat. He had a mustache that gave him an appearance similar to that of former Yankee catcher Thurman Munson. [2] His name was a play on the classic American folk song "Yankee Doodle Dandy".

In 1978, the Phillie Phanatic was unleashed on fans in Philadelphia. The creators of the Phanatic, Acme Mascots, were later approached by management from the Yankees franchise to create a Bronx equivalent to Philadelphia’s Phanatic.

Youppi!, a creation of Acme Mascots, Inc. (a division of Harrison/Erickson, Inc.), was commissioned by Montreal Expos vice-president Roger D. Landry. Originally leased by the baseball team in 1979, the mascot was eventually purchased by the Expos and represented them until they moved to Washington, D.C. , after the 2004 season.
