So here is what I have found makes for successful plein air painting: I use a limited palette of Golden Open Acrylic, which stays open on a disposable palette. The surfaces I paint on have been textured with my favorite gesso to add more substance to the acrylic paint.

For plein air with acrylics, the sun will dry the paint so fast you can’t even blend a good gradient! I like to have a bottle of extender on hand to get more drying time so I can have soft edges and smooth gradients. I thoroughly mix it into my paint piles with a palette knife before painting, especially on a hot day! Brushes. Just a few will do.
