Bala was born on 19 December 1982, [1] into a family associated with the Tamil film industry. His grandfather, A. K. Velan, owned the film production house Arunachalam Studios [2] and worked as a producer and screenwriter.

His grandfather owned Arunachala Studios in Saligramam, Chennai, and his father, Jeyakumar, directed over 350 films and documentaries. After debuting in Telugu cinema with the film 2 Much in 2002 and in Tamil cinema with the film Anbu in 2003, Bala later earned success in several Malayalam films.
