The flag of New Zealand (Māori: te haki o Aotearoa), also known as the New Zealand Ensign, [1] is based on the British maritime Blue Ensign – a blue field with the Union Jack in the canton or upper hoist corner – augmented or defaced with four red stars centred within four white stars, representing the Southern Cross constellation.

The name was originally used by Māori in reference only to the North Island , with the whole country being referred to as Aotearoa me Te Waipounamu – where Te Ika-a-Māui means North Island, and Te Waipounamu means South Island . Busby declared the chosen flag the official flag of Aotearoa and this was celebrated with a 21 gun salute from the HMS Alligator, and as important, Gazetted in New South Wales, 17th August 1835. The new flag of Governor Bourkes design was then sent back to New South Wales for passage to King William IV

2020年6月9日 · To many of us, our flag — a blue background with the four stars of the Southern Cross and the Union Jack — has ‘always’ been our flag and we don’t think there may have been another version, or about how it came into being.

The Aotearoa flag was made by Jane Foley, or Hēni Te Kirikaramu Pore. Trained in the missionary schools, she was fluent in Māori, English and French, and was as capable with the shotgun as the needle. The flag was captured by Major Jackson of the Forest Rangers in a raid on a Māori camp in the Upper Wairoa district on 13 December 1863.
