The result was a costly nine year war which added resurgent Islam to Moscow's long list of enemies.

Russia's more active involvement in Afghanistan includes business investment proposals, diplomatic propaganda, cultural programs, financial and military support for the central government, power influence in the north and with the Taliban.

The map shows the encroachments by Imperial Russia into the northeastern territory of Afghanistan during the period between 1881 and 1885. Not reflected on this map are further changes brought about eight years later, in 1893, with the establishment of the Durand Line demarcating the boundaries between Afghanistan and British India.

In recent history, the Soviet Union was an enabler for the communist regime that took power later in the 20th century and ultimately invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to keep that communist regime in power. It then fought a long war fighting against the mujahedeen until it retreated in 1989.
