Agra (/ ˈ ɑː ɡ r ə / AH-grə; Hindi: [ˈaːɡɾaː] ⓘ) is a city on the banks of the Yamuna river in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, about 230 kilometres (140 mi) south-east of the national capital Delhi and 330 km west of the state capital Lucknow.

The Mughal Empire had a number of imperial flags and standards. The principal imperial standard of the Mughals was known as the alam (Alam علم). It was primarily moss green. [1] It displayed a lion and sun (Shēr-ō-khurshīd شیر و خورشید) facing the hoist of the flag.

Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath defeated Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar in 1719, unfurling Maratha flag at Agra fort for the first time. But the Maratha confederacy lacked a handful grip over the fort. As a result, next few decades of Agra fort history went through a highly political turbulence.
