This section sets out the Rules that define the AGS Format. The Rules have been the subject of much discussion and these notes seek to explain the overall framework within which they are formulated. A fundamental consideration has been that potential users of the Format should be able to use standard software tools to produce the data files.

The AGS Data Management Working Party continually monitors the use of the AGS Format for the electronic transfer of data in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental industries and has prepared a new version to be known as "AGS4" which contains an updated Data Dictionary and revised rules for AGS Format files.

The industry will be benefited by using the AGS Format as the single standard to use for data transfer. Also, the AGS data plays an important role of geotechnical and geoenvironmental data management as part of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) process.

Currently 4 different borehole data file formats (text format) are supported. The AGS format as established by the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists. Version 4 is not supprted. More information is available at www.ags.org.uk. CSV is a comma separated text file format. Lines starting with a hash (#) are ignored.
