Ahaz, the son of Jotham and father of Hezekiah, was the twelfth king of Judah, reigning from approximately 735 to 715 BC. His reign is documented in the biblical books of 2 Kings 16, 2 Chronicles 28, and Isaiah 7-8. Ahaz is often remembered for his idolatrous practices and political alliances that led Judah away from the worship of Yahweh.

Ahaz was the son of Jotham, king of Judah. He succeeded to the throne at the age of 20 years (according to another reading 25). The chronology of his reign is difficult, as his son Hezekiah is stated to have been 25 years of age when he began to reign 16 years after (2 Kings 18:2).

Ahaz was a wicked king whose apostasy led Judah astray and brought the nation to ruin. Rather than worship the God of Israel, Ahaz made images of Baal. He even sacrificed his own children to the false god, a practice strongly condemned by the Lord. Because of his wickedness, God allowed both Syria and Israel to successfully attack Judah.
