Ai Qing (Chinese: 艾青; pinyin: Ài Qīng; Wade–Giles: Ai Ch'ing, March 27, 1910 – May 5, 1996), born Jiang Zhenghan (Chinese: 蒋正涵; pinyin: Jiǎng Zhènghán) and styled Jiang Haicheng (Chinese: 蒋海澄; pinyin: Jiǎng Hǎichéng), was a 20th-century Chinese poet.

Ai Qing (born March 27, 1910, Jinhua, Zhejiang province, China—died May 5, 1996, Beijing) was a Chinese poet whose free verse was influential in the development of xinshi (“new poetry”). The son of a well-to-do landowner, Ai Qing was encouraged to learn Western languages.

Ai Qing (1910-1996), a native of Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, was born in a landlord family but was breast-fed by a poor countrywoman. This special life experience exerted profound and major influence on the formation of Ai Qing's personality and his later poetry creation.

One of the most influential poets in Chinese history, Ai Qing is mostly unknown to American readers, but his work has shaped the nature of poetry in China for decades. Born between the fall of imperial Manchurian rule and the establishment of the Communist People’s Republic, Ai Qing was at one time an intimate of Mao Zedong.
