Kandahar International Airport, Afghanistan is 16 km from Kandahar City, in the southern side of the country. It is one of the largest airports of Afghanistan. Until 2006, it was operated by the United States of America.

Shindand Airbase, built in 1961, was originally a Soviet airbase. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the base reverted to Afghanistan control. The base became the heart of the Afghan Air Force. Invading forces repeatedly bombed the base in 2002 in the quest to find al Quida and bin Laden.

When the war against Afghanistan was at its peak, there were around 4000 American soldiers who were stationed at this base. Along with the American soldiers were two dozens of KC-10A Extenders and KC-135 Stratotankers which were used for the re-fuelling of bombers and fighter jets over Afghanistan.

This Air Force military installation played very important roles during the upcoming wars too – the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, the Yugoslavian conflict and the recent invasions in the Middle East, of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Camp Leatherneck is the home base of most United States Marine Corps operations in Afghanistan. The base began life as a barren outpost in 2009, but has quickly expanded into a 1,600 acre fairly modern facility that is a military powerhouse in the area.
