The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Committee on Framing Standards has developed AISI S240, North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing, to address requirements for construction with cold-formed steel structural framing that are common to prescriptive and engineered design.

This Standard applies to the design of structural members cold-formed to shape from carbon or low-alloy steel sheet, strip, plate, or bar not more than 1 in. (25.4 mm) in thickness and used for load-carrying purposes in buildings, and structures other than buildings provided allowances are made for dynamic effects.

From 2001 to 2012, the AISI Committee on Framing Standards developed nine different framing standards to cover specific aspects of cold-formed steel framing. Six of these standards addressed the design of structural elements, such as general provisions, wall studs, floor joists, trusses, headers, and shear walls.
