Giza is most famous as the location of the Giza Plateau, the site of some of the most impressive ancient monuments in the world, including a complex of ancient Egyptian royal mortuary and sacred structures, among which are the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other large pyramids and temples.

Giza, city, capital of Al-Jizah muhafazah (governorate) in Upper Egypt, located on the west bank of the Nile River just south-southwest of Cairo. It is the site of the three great pyramids of the 4th-dynasty pharaohs as well as the Sphinx, smaller pyramids, tombs, and temples.

The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for king Khufu (c. 2589–2566 BC), and the other two for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is both the oldest and largest of the three, and the first building to exceed it in height would not be built for another 3,800 years!
