The state of Alabama has a total of 41 official state emblems. The oldest symbol is the Alabama State Bible, from 1853. [1] . The most recently designated symbol is the Little Bluestem, Alabama's state native grass, established in 2024.

In the centre of the seal an eagle is represented with raised wings alighting upon the national shield, with three arrows in his left talon. The eagle holds in his beak a streamer, on which immediately over the wings are the words 'HERE WE REST.'

The first seal of the state of Alabama lasted from 1819 for 50 years, until the legislature decided that a new seal was needed during the Reconstruction period. The original seal was scrapped, and a new one featuring the U.S. seal and an eagle became the official seal, lasting until 1939.
