The loco was constructed as an AL6 at Doncaster Works, new to traffic in August 1965 numbered E3103. It was renumbered to 86004 in June 1973, renumbered again to 86404 in January 1986 and finally to 86604 in September 1990.

BR AL6 AC electric loco E3135 at Euston station, in 1966. The loco had entered service in January 1966, and later became Class 86 86040, and later 86256. It was withdrawn in October 2002, and finally scrapped in March 2006.
