The ALCO 251 is a 4-stroke diesel engine that was developed by the American Locomotive Company to replace its 244 and 539 engines. The 251 was developed to be used in diesel locomotives, as a marine power plant in ships, and as a stationary power generator.

1999年2月8日 · The American Locomotive Co., ALCO inherited from a predecessor company a heavy 200 lb per hp slow running 120 to 700 rpm diesel engine design. ALCO was the first manufacturer in the U.S. to introduce turbo-supercharging for a diesel engine, which increased its output from 600 to 900 bhp, cutting the power to weight ratio by almost a third.

While it proved to be quite successful, it sadly outlived its original manufacturer, ALCO who closed their doors in 1969.

The FM/ALCO 251 engine is a rugged 4-stroke engine, available in 6, 8, 12, 16, and 18 cylinder configurations covering 1050 to 4500 bhp. All versions feature exceptional commonality of components with 229 mm (9 in) bore and 267 mm (10.5 in) stroke used throughout.

1990年7月7日 · The locomotives were re-engined with the 2,000 horsepower ALCo 12-cylinder 251C engine, and the long hood was raised six inches to accommodate the larger engine. The dynamic brakes were also moved to a box behind the cab. This class was also known by their M-K designation of TE56.
