The railroad’s operating department had always favored big motive power to move its mainline trains; just look at its 4-12-2 Union Pacifics, 4-6-6-4 Challengers, and 4-8-8-4 Big Boys in steam days.

The C855 was launched in 1964 in response to a request from Union Pacific for a dual engine unit to replace up to ten first-generation locomotives. It was powered by two Model 251C 16-cylinder engines, producing 5,500 horsepower. Only three were built, all in 1964.

At 86 feet in length, 16 feet 4¾ inches tall, the 5500 horsepower C855 tipped the scales at 528,000 pounds fully provisioned. The C855's spent their lives in the general freight pool based at North Platte, Nebraska. Unfortunately, they were prone to nagging failures, and with Alco's uncertain future, no more C855's were built.

Simple analysis suggests that Type E could have provided a better-graduated 16-notch control than did three-field.
