The ALCO boxcabs were diesel-electric switcher locomotives, otherwise known as AGEIR boxcabs as a contraction of the names of the builders. Produced by a partnership of three companies, ALCO (American Locomotive Company) built the chassis and running gear, General Electric the generator, motors and controls, and Ingersoll Rand the diesel engine.

ALCO DL-109 The Original Exotic Cab Unit
ALCo used an all-out publicity campaign to promote the PA cab units and quickly phased out DL-109 production once the decision was made to promote the PA as its premier passenger locomotive. With the introduction of the Model 244 16 cylinder prime mover, the PA quickly replaced the DL-109 in ALCo's stable of diesel locomotives.

Pictured here is an example of an Alco (DL500) "World Locomotive". The 1800-horsepower was a cousin to Montreal Locomotive Works's FPA-4 passenger power. Introduced in 1953, most "World Locomotives" were powered by Alco's 251B V12 engine and rode atop six-wheel trucks.
