The six axle models were meant to provide a sizable increase in traction and be used on light branch/secondary lines allowing the locomotive's weight to be distributed more evenly over additional axles.

2014年10月19日 · According to the Second Diesel Spotters Guide there is no difference between the RSD4 and the RSD5 in looks or prime mover horsepower. Both had the 1600hp 244 engines. The only difference is the RSD5 had a larger main generator and it was the same generator used in the Alco PA2 locomotives. The RSD5 also had a longer production run than the RSD4.
