The ALCO RS-3 is a 1,600 hp (1.2 MW), B-B diesel-electric locomotive manufactured from May 1950 to August 1956 by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and its subsidiary Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW). A total of 1,418 were produced: 1,272 for American railroads, 98 for Canadian railroads, 48 for Brazilian railroads, and seven for Mexican railroads.

2024年12月27日 · The RS3 was Alco's pinnacle in its early road switcher designs. While the American Locomotive Company would have some success in later Road Switcher (RS) series models, like the RS11 and RSD5, nothing would compare to the amazing success of the RS3.

2024年1月9日 · ALCO RS-3, RSC-3. Widely circulated RS-3 phases appear to have originated in a series of detailed articles in Mainline Modeler from 1984 to 1986, and describe variations in the louvers and air filters on the carbody and battery boxes.

Here, too, a six-axle variant with four powered axles was developed as the RSC-3. To overcome the reliability problems of the 244 series prime mover, 98 RS-3s were rebuilt between 1972 and 1978 with EMD 567 engines. The engines, including the fan system, came from decommissioned EMD E8s. These were named RS-3m to distinguish them.

These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE electrical components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments.
