The YDM-4 is a class of diesel locomotives operating on Indian Railways. The first units were built by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1961. Since 1968, members of the class have been manufactured in India by the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi. The model name stands for metre gauge (Y), diesel (D), mixed traffic (M) engine.

2017年2月11日 · Unlike the broad-gauge designs, the YDM4 was fitted with an ALCO 6-cylinder in-line 251-D engine, which gave 1350 hp and a brake horsepower in the range of 1100–1200 hp. Without any competition from electrics, this locomotive continued to hold its dominance over the vast meter-gauge network in India.

The initial batch of 55 from Alco were used for evaluation and comparison with a similar batch of General Motors locos. The Alcos were chosen as the preferred MG main-line diesel locos. Alco model is DL535A.

YDM4 is a 1350 hp ALCO designed diesel locomotive. It is the main work horse of entire Metre Gauge (MG - 1000mm) Sections of INDIAN RAILWAYS. Due to the unigauge policy of INDIAN RAILWAYS, the MG tracks are now converted to Broad Gauge (1676mm).

2024年6月23日 · YDM4 #6130 to #6198 were built by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) in 1964 under the license of ALCO and were classified as YDM-4A. All the YDM-4 delivered up to then were presumably based at three premier DLS across India namely Siliguri (SGUJ), Ponmalai Goldenrock (GOC) and Sabarmati (SBI).
