Alfaxalone is a neurologically active steroid compound that induces general anesthesia. Alfaxalone exerts its action by binding to GABA receptors on the neuronal cell surface, affecting cell membrane chloride ion transport. It has negligible analgesic properties at therapeutic doses.

Alfaxalone is a rapidly acting hydrophobic synthetic neurosteroid. It is indicated for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia and for induction of anesthesia followed by maintenance with an inhalant anesthetic, in cats and dogs.

Similar to propofol, alfaxalone is an induction agent that, because of its short half-life in dogs and cats, is very suitable for repeated bolus injections or a continuous rate infusion (CRI). Unlike propofol, alfaxalone does not show the lingering, potentially adverse effects when used repeatedly in close succession or as a longer duration CRI.
